Model Formats to Support?

Postby John Nicol » Tue May 01, 2007 8:07 pm

Hi Everyone,

Well, we are trying to decide which model formats to support next. We have DirectX (*.x) and Wavefront (*.obj) that we are thinking about. If we do *.obj, then this will support unreal models as well because the unrealed supports obj files. I was thinking that we would export directly to *.utx, but obj gives us more flexibility. Any thoughts? Are there any other model formats that people would like to see? Let me know.....

You may want to consider VRML and Quake formats as well.

I have a vested interested in being able to export to the FS-X formatted direct x format

Good news on the DirectX support. For our V2, we will support import and export of .x models and we support the xtomdl utility from Microsoft to convert to FSX ready models. Animation is still being worked on, including key framing. I know that this will be a limitation for now, but its coming.

Still thinking about vrml.....

Quake mdls are not currently on the plan, although if there is enough noise from the community to do it, we can put it in.

Hi Felix

Fancy seeing you here

this program looks very interesting to me also

My current problem with all the available x file imports is they do not retain the texture coordinates when the x file comes from FSDS
(Abacus Flightsim Design Shop)
so none of my FSX models can be imported in a useable state.

Just need to save up $1000 now  as demo is not long enough for a luddite like me to learn this new one

Regards
Rick
